Define beater.

GOP Congressman Beater is more like it.

For once I agreed with Tom’s suggestion. SX4s are great choices.

Reminds me of House Hunters memes.
From now on, anything under $11,000 is cheap to me because that’s what the TSX cost.

I beat my eggs like they owe me money.
![]() 12/21/2017 at 21:52 |

But is everything up to 11 grand also a beater? NO
![]() 12/21/2017 at 21:56 |

It is to me now. What even was life before heated seats and six gears and three charging ports?
![]() 12/21/2017 at 21:57 |

It might be the best suggestion they’ve ever made in one of those columns.
![]() 12/21/2017 at 21:57 |

Don’t be hatin’ on the labradoodles.
![]() 12/21/2017 at 21:59 |

I didn’t make that, it was just the first result for House Hunters memes.

This was my winter “beater” that cost under $10k.
![]() 12/21/2017 at 22:22 |
|
$10k? I have an Accord that’ll do the trick for $7k!
![]() 12/21/2017 at 22:24 |
|
That’s only a markup of about 600%! Holiday savings!!!
![]() 12/21/2017 at 22:25 |

Also, why does someone from portland need AWD? I’ve driven out to eastern Washington when it was snowing in a ‘92 on summer tires and was fine. I certainly wouldn’t recommend it, but AWD is certainly overkill for PNW winters.
![]() 12/21/2017 at 22:25 |

I wish I had 10,000 to spend on 2 everyday cars for the year. Does it even winter in Portland?

Kinja won’t let me edit, but it was a Civic. Pic because y knot?
If I knew what was going to happen with the Accord, I never would’ve sold it.

I certainly don’t consider myself wealthy, but geez! If a car that cost 10 grand counts as a “cheap beater” I must be one of the poors!
![]() 12/21/2017 at 22:56 |

No no no. They want something reliable to drive, not an albatross around their neck.
![]() 12/21/2017 at 23:31 |

They said “Doesn’t want: A beater that’s about to fall apart.” The Accord’s already falling apart!

My definition of “Winter Beater” is cars $1200 and under. It’s mostly just 80s & 90s GM products & 90s Hondas with microwave sized rot holes. But hell, I’d never say no to a $500 ‘87 Cavalier that would last me 5 months of abuse.
![]() 12/21/2017 at 23:40 |

I can’t argue that logic.
![]() 12/21/2017 at 23:45 |

Show me this mythical expensive beater!
![]() 12/22/2017 at 00:20 |

I’m with you. My beaters max out at like $3k and usually run me around $2k, and they are sufficiently-reliable that I never really worry about not getting to work in them.
That said, the PNW tax is real. Our used cars are ridiculously expensive. Go ahead, compare it to what you can find for the same money in SoCal and feel deeply depressed.
Seriously, though, at $10k it should be capable of year-round daily duty and have heated seats.
![]() 12/22/2017 at 00:26 |

I dug them before they stopped making them. Cheapest AWD you could buy and I believe they were available in manual. Avoided the Subaru tax, too.
That said, not much above this and the person could land a Forester XT, which is awesome and totally suitable for year-round daily duty.

$10,000 is the kind of money I plan to save up for a nice driver-condition Corvair (in a few years) or the kind of money it’d take for a good Opel GT for Cletus, and those are collector cars.

Man, I should’ve responded to this one, I guess.
THAT’S LIKE ELEVEN WORKING 944s! But if you winter-beater a 944, you’re a bad person and I’m never talking to you again. Just like, buy a friggin’ Yaris.
![]() 12/22/2017 at 06:10 |

THAT’s a winter beater; dude was livin’ the dream.
ETA: damnit, Kinja! Quitcher nibbling!
There we go. Finally
![]() 12/22/2017 at 08:15 |

$10k is exactly what we paid for my wife’s current daily driver. And it is in no way a beater.

He can buy a new Chevy Spark for that price.

I like labradoodles, but every golden doodle I’ve met is kind of an asshole.
![]() 12/22/2017 at 08:55 |

One of my friends has one, he’s not an asshole but he doesn’t seem as intelligent as my parents’ labradoodle.

This is funny because it’s true.
